hit the road jackThe 24 September 2009 edition of the The Varsity included a piece written by UofT Liberals President Gabe De Roche.

The comment piece, titled “Hit the Road, Jack!” was written in response to Jack, Olivia, and the New Democrats’ selling-out to the Harper Conservatives.

On Friday 18 September 2009, Jack and the NDP stood up in support of the Harper government, reversing their usual commitment to voting against the Reformatories.

Why? Because he was going to lose seats if an election were held.  The NDP has raised just over a million dollars (compared to over 20x that by the Liberals and Conservatives).  They’ve only nominated 10 percent of their candidates nationwide.  And many of their caucus members are new MPs who haven’t been able to establish themselves in their ridings, and are thus electorally vulnerable.

As usual, it’s politics before principles for Jack and the New Democrats — just like in 2005 when they walked away from national childcare, a national housing strategy, a solid commitment to climate change, and the Kelowna Accord for aboriginal Canadians.  Then, as now, they stood with Harper Conservatives.  They betrayed their principles, and they betrayed progressive Canadians on campus and across this country.

Recruitment Day was an astounding success.  Special thanks to Christine Innes, our federal Liberal candidate for Trinity-Spadina for joining us (and for keeping a good sense of humour with some of the Frosh Week absurdities going on around us!) — and also to the UofT Liberal exec members who came out to help: Gabe, Daniel, Emilee, Laura, Doug, Alex, Yvonne, Andreas, Mike, Grant and everyone who stopped by to meet some of our new members.

hoskinsJoin a large a contingent from the UofT Liberals as we canvass the riding of St. Paul’s in advance of the 17 September 2009 byelection.

Eric is the co-founder of War Child Canada, an Officer of the Order of Canada, a recipient of the UN Peace Medal, and a practicing family doctor.  He was the Senior Policy Advisor to Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy while Canada sat on the UN Security Council.

He is a great candidate, and this byelection is going to be close — so the help of UofT Liberal volunteers is going to be crucial.  We hope you’ll join us on Sunday!

Date: Sunday, September 13, 2009.

Time: 11:30 am

Location: Meet outside Hart House, and then we’ll take the subway up to the campaign office.

RSVP: president@uoftliberals.com
